Dwayne: The Boy Who Stood Between Me and the World

Dwayne: The Boy Who Stood Between Me and the World

There are some people in your life who don’t just walk beside you…

They stand between you and everything that could hurt you.

Dwayne was that for me.

We grew up on Frost Lane, where the road was long, the work was real, and life didn’t slow down just because you were young. But somehow, in the middle of all that, I never felt alone.

Because I had him.

He was my brother… but more than that, he was my steady place.

When the world felt too big, he made it smaller.
When things got hard, he made them lighter.
And when I didn’t yet understand how to stand strong… he stood strong for me.

There wasn’t a lot of talking about it back then.

That’s not how we were raised.

Love didn’t come in long conversations.
It came in presence.

In the way he walked just a little closer when things felt uncertain.
In the way he paid attention without making it known.
In the quiet way he made sure I was alright… without ever asking.

On Frost Lane, you learned early that life could be both beautiful and hard.

And in those early years, Dwayne became my understanding of both.

He showed me that strength didn’t have to be loud.
That protection didn’t have to be announced.
That love… real love… could be steady, quiet, and unwavering.

Even now, I can still feel it.

Not in memory alone… but in who I became because of him.

Because when someone stands between you and the world long enough…

They don’t just protect you.

They shape you.

And some of that shaping… never leaves.
